Lynne thankyou for the history.log, by the look of it you got some of the updates you were after. I'm not sure why you can't access the logs I mentioned.
What release are you running, I'm guessing 10.10 by looking at the history log? Do you know the administrative/root password for the system? Did you try to navigate to the var directory using the file manager? (you'll need to look under the "filesystem" in the file manager). do you know how to the use the command line?
