Ubuntu is running from a CD-RW media, so the drive is locked, the media cannot be changed in LiveCD mode. ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ ls -l /dev/sr* brw-rw----+ 1 root cdrom 11, 0 2012-01-03 21:07 /dev/sr0 ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ ls -l /dev/cd* lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2012-01-03 21:07 /dev/cdrom -> sr0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2012-01-03 21:07 /dev/cdrw -> sr0 I can reproduce this problem running System Testing - optical/read_sr0. The test case runs for several minutes and finally it displays the following dialog window: [Info] (i) Test optical/read_sr0 from suite optical/read failed. Do you want to report a bug?
