Ok, point taken. It is much much more complicated than I believed. Guess
I need to anticipate beyond Linux.

And since we talk about a specific case of upgrading really, either the 
addresses are already obsolete or not. So that should not make things really 
worse. I guess the conditional link-to-tail solution sounds like the way 
forward then.
