Attached. This is now on a Beta 1 live CD, running dist-upgrade to get
the newest hplip before attaching the printer for the first time.
Similar to before, after plugin download it's uploaded to the printer
once, but detaching USB cable, power-cycling printer and attaching USB
cable again does not upload the firmware anymore.

So it's not like the problem at the time when the alternative driver was
actually deleting the udev rule, but from the syslog it still sounds
like the two would perhaps be conflicting?

** Changed in: hplip (Ubuntu)
       Status: Incomplete => New

** Description changed:

  Tried out on:
  - 12.04 alpha2
  - UPDATE 1: 20120213 daily image + dist-upgrade, same results.
  - UPDATE 2: 20120223.1 daily image (new cups 1.5.2-4, hplip 3.12.2-1 etc.) -
still the same "/usr/sbin/hpljP1005: foo2zjs: Missing HP LaserJet P1005
firmware file /lib/firmware/hp/sihpP1005.dl" every time except the first
+ - UPDATE 3: Beta 1 + dist-upgrade

Here are first the steps of what happens after plugging in the printer:

  1. A terminal window appears, with lots of text and options d(ownload) /
s(p)ecify / q(uit). Pressing Enter is enough (only hint at this is the *
besides that option)
  2. Plugin downloads and license text is shown. Pressing Enter is enough (yes
is marked with *).
  3. The plugin apparently loads since printer makes noise. The terminal is
left open with the following text as last:
  "Downloading firmware to device hp://..."
  "Firmware download successful."
  "Done."
  4. Printing would be possible at this point.

  However:
  5. Detach usb cable, power off printer, power on again, attach USB cable.
  6. Nothing happens, no firmware is loaded.

Manually running "hp-firmware" from the command line loads up the plugin
and printing works. In addition to normal apport attachments I'm
attaching a syslog which has eg. foo2zjs complaints.
