Happened again with similar scenario. Update via update-manager. Download and install updates. Use check-button to renew cache. Apport displays it's generic crash message, requests authentication to report, reveals it was an aptdaemon crash, which points to bug 971839, dialog window again says web browser couldn't be opened. This time Firefox was already open and displays the bug report.
