For me, this problem developed about a week ago. Cannot recall exactly when. Changing grub did not work.
Also, the Kubuntu Launcher buttons no longer work either. I have shut down by using Terminal, <sudo halt> The notebook (DELL xps m1530) then shuts down but does not actually shut off.
