I will try to update the bios but it will take a few days. Dell's bios
updater says it works with dos and windows but when I tried it last
night I found out it does not run on dos so I will have to reinstalled
Windows again to do the update. (SIGH!) I attempted to do it through
WINE and a few other ways I found online but I think using windows is
the most reliable.

I'm also going to switch my network ecryption to WEP and see if things
improve. I recently bought a newer router and started to use WPA2. I
dont remember if I was ok using just WEP. I will report my findings
when I can on this.

I went to the page on comment 5 and first tried the bcmwl-kernel-source and
that did not work. When I installed that driver I was not able to find the
wireless in the Network listing.
When I tried the broadcom-sta driver the wireless did not work either but I
can't remember exactly what the result was.

After that I went to the b43 page and followed the directions for b43-fwcutter
driver. After I installed that I unloaded the drivers using
sudo modprobe -r b43 bcma
sudo modprobe -r brcmsmac bcma
sudo modprobe -r wl

Then I restarted each one using.
sudo modprobe b43
sudo modprobe brcmsmac
sudo modprobe wl

Using that method I found that b43 made things work again. I then
blacklisted the other two drivers and for the most part things have
improved.

As for what I driver I was using before I'm pretty sure I was using b43
but I'm really new at Ubuntu and I'm not sure if I installed all the
drivers properly or even how I got the wireless working in the first
place, there was a lot of trial and error when I first installed ubuntu
on this laptop. It was running fine for about 3-4 months and I just
started to notice this problem in mid November.

Let me test with WEP and if that doesn't do it I'll install windows
again and update the bios.
