I continued my battle, and wound up in an unexpected place. I have a new mb, ASUS Rampage IV Formula, with UEFI. UEFI is the cause of my troubles. I am now using the iso for this issue that contains Grub2, and other things to help deal with this issue.
I installed 12.10 without issue, did a reboot successfuly, then did updates which involved a newer Linux package. When I did the reboot, it failed. Before I got to this issue, I learned I should have updated the BIOS. The MB, apparently came with a bios that does not understand 3TB drives, and does not understand SSD's. I do a build of my pc about ever two years, in this case 2.5 years. Lots of changes in that time and I might as well be a newbie. Frustrating. I am in the process of installing Ubuntu 12.10 with the ISO described above. I hope it works. 2 days of installing Ubuntu!? annoying. ** Attachment added: "EFI 'secure' version of Ubuntu 12.10 description and steps" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1102079/+attachment/3495841/+files/Ubuntu%20and%20UEFI%20secure.pdf -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1102079 Title: install 12.04 to ssd fails To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1102079/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
