I continued my battle, and wound up in an unexpected place. I have a new
mb, ASUS Rampage IV Formula, with UEFI. UEFI is the cause of my
troubles. I am now using the iso for this issue that contains Grub2, and
other things to help deal with this issue.

I installed 12.10 without issue, did a reboot successfuly, then did
updates which involved a newer Linux package. When I did the reboot, it
failed.

Before I got to this issue, I learned I should have updated the BIOS.
The MB, apparently came with a bios that does not understand 3TB drives,
and does not understand SSD's.

I do a build of my pc about ever two years, in this case 2.5 years. Lots
of changes in that time and I might as well be a newbie. Frustrating.

I am in the process of installing Ubuntu 12.10 with the ISO described
above. I hope it works. 2 days of installing Ubuntu!? annoying.
