Also, in the 12.10 system, I compiled the latest mainline kernel from kernel.org from scratch with the config file from the 13.04 kernel and interestingly I could boot into a session without a crash, but the session was extremely slow, so there seems to be a nouveau bug present there. Are you sure the kernel "3.8.0-030800-generic" is the latest mainline kernel from 2/18/2013?
