The difference is on 3.5 I can start jack with 64 frames/period, which is a round trip latency of 2.7 ms. On 3.8.0-19 and later kernels, the device will not start with jack with less than 512 frames/period, which is a round trip latency of 21.3 ms - an order of magnitude different. This is not really usable for some audio applications where realtime monitoring of the processed signal is required.
