You seem to ignore that folders can (and will) not only contain
messages, but subfolders as well (where we will run into the same
problem again if the subfolder has the same name as an existing folder
in the destination folder). Certainly doable, but way out of scope of
this bug in my opinion.

My opinion: Can we please fix this bug quickly (I regularly rename
folders just to be able to delete them...) instead of building the ideal
bike shed for everybody? Auto-renaming folders when moved elsewhere is
fine for me, asking the user about it is fine too, but if we try to add
merging functionality (with its own problems) this bug will not be fixed
within the next 10 years, I suppose.
