I click on the menu on the top-right on the screen and I select "About
this computer", which is a shortcut to System Settings -> System /
Details.

It shows the version of Ubuntu and several useful pieces of information
about the hardware, but it doesn't tell you the kernel in use, and it
should. That's very basic system information.
