Okay, v4.3-wily boots and does not exhibit the original bug. Same for v4.1-wily.
Looks like there's another bug here with v4.4-wily as I mentioned, not sure if another bug should be raised for that? I also think I have a test that I can perform to reproduce the fault on- demand - just keep suspending and resuming a few times and the screen soon locks up. This didn't happen with v4.1 or v4.3. If this holds true it might be practical to bisect, otherwise probably not. I was going to bisect the kernel archives to find where the problem started, but I figure I should check with you first.
