And I forgot to mention the fact that there is nothing wrong with the xD
smartcard medium which I inserted. This very same medium was recently
read in Windows XP without any problems. However, its partition table
appears to be unreadable within this particular Linux distribution for
some reason. In addition, years ago, this same device was functioning
perfectly out-of-the-box within openSUSE 10.2 (i.e., when hal played a
role); the card's partition was even automounted, and its contents were
displayed automatically within a konqueror window. Unfortunately, since
then, it hadn't worked at all within any newer version of Linux that was
tested; in some distributions, inserting the medium even caused the
system to crash.
