Public bug reported:

After replacing Xubuntu 14.04 with 16.04 (a fresh install from the ISO)
I have found that the system's monospace font is being incorrectly
rendered in some applications. It seems that too much space is being
placed between the characters, perhaps because the typeface hinting is
being ignored?

I have attached an image that shows DejaVu Sans Mono rendered at 10pt in
Pluma 1.12.2, Xfce Terminal 0.6.3 and Code::Blocks 13.12. Only the Xfce
terminal uses the correct kerning, the others space the characters too
far apart.

This is making development work extremely difficult because lines of
code are now displayed much wider than they were before.

** Affects: xfdesktop4 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New

** Attachment added: "A visual example of the rendering bug."
