Is there something unusual about your system ? Is it normally reliable ? The log seems very odd. Either the log is corrupted or something very strange is going on - almost as if you had two copies of dpkg running at once.
You didn't remove any lockfiles or touch anything in /var/lib/dpkg, did you ? What filesystems are you using ?
