You are correct; I didn't realize one was from 'updates' and the other wasn't. I must have disabled 'trusty-updates' sometime before upgrading the system to 16.04. I still think the version numbering is inconsistent. Disabling the 'updates' repository should not result in this kind of situation upon system upgrade (I could not install certain packages anymore and the errors shown by apt-get are not meaningful at all). Anyway, thank you for your help, it solved the problem.
