Public bug reported: Found my issue reported here, and that original poster has not filed a bug but request to do so is in the comments. https://askubuntu.com/questions/1311139/my-ubuntu-vm-gets-a-kernel-panic-unless-i-start-with-linux-5-4-0-58
Steps to Reproduce: 1. Download Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS Image - https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop/thank-you?version=20.04.1&architecture=amd64 2. Download VirtualBox 6.1.18 - https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/6.1.18/VirtualBox-6.1.18-142142-Win.exe 3. Install VirtualBox 6.1.18 4. Create a new machine with 4GB Memory, 30GB Harddrive (I believe I can reproduce this with smaller HDD, and don't believe this is a resource issue). 5. Mount the ISO image. 6. Install Ubuntu with defaults 7. Media is automatically removed, press Enter. 8. First boot with GRUB having 'Ubuntu' selected will error with last message visible on the machine: [drm:vmw_host_log [vmwgfx]] *ERROR* Failed to send host log message." 9. Reset the machine and select "Advanced options for Ubuntu" and then select "Ubuntu, with Linux 5.8.0-40-generic (recovery mode)." Boot sequence ends with a kernel panic (typed by hand): Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt Kernel Offset: 0x18600000 from 0xffffffff81000000 (relocation range: 0xffffffff80000000-0xffffffffbfffffff) I am unable to find the boot log on the HDD, and the screen cannot be resized to take a screenshot of the entire error message.
