Thanks for that. I had suspected a full reinstall without safe graphics
mode might solve it.
Historically that just involved a kernel parameter that I could identify
but in this case your safe graphics mode was coming from somewhere else.
Maybe a config file gets installed in that case? I really should find
out how it's implemented...
