The workaround I have is not booting in Xgl but in Xorg. So, when your
computer starts, ctrl + F1, there you have to log in. then type

sudo etc/init.d/gsm.multi-save stop
or sudo killall -9 gdm

then type
startx

But be carefull you start the right x-org session. Disadvantage by not
starting through GDM is that you can't reboot/halt your computer with
the shutdown dialog or that you can't easyli swith user via gsdm. But
the improved speed of OOo makes it worth a try.
