I'm sorry TJ, but I'm not sure what to do. I've lost several days on this now and it's still not clear how to apply your patch to the Ubuntu source package. My understanding was that quilt(1) was the standard way to apply a downstream patch before the package is built. I'll keep fiddling with it in the mean time, but if you can provide any pointers that would be helpful.
