Further information:
Running WAYLAND_DISPLAY"" before blender seems to mitigate the issue.
It's a hacky workaround, but hope it helps to better understand the
issue.
To summarize, I created an sh file that reads as follows:
...
!/bin/bash
WAYLAND_DISPLAY=""
exec {path to blender}/blender
read
...
This seems to be working so far.
