just explode your test matrix and make it unwieldy as you add more of
these.

Maybe check with other teams on whether similar things have come up in
the past, and move to a dot-release schedule if it makes sense?

Whatever you end up choosing, it doesn't make sense to have a bug live
on in the LTS releases, so making the new change the default, and having
the older machine type for bug + live migration compat is the way to do
it.
