Sorry for the late reply.

I can now only reproduce this by dual booting.

If I boot into Windows (which is rare), then reboot into Ubuntu via
restarting windows, there is no wi-fi adapter.

If I shut down Windows and unplug, then boot Ubuntu, I have a wi-fi-
adapter.
