Interesting, thanks for the report Jeremy. I do not know which was is better, we'd take away what users seem to use (seeing the complains on removal) yet judging if it is good or not is hard. As you said the bug discussion is lengthy already. And in between are POVs which paint a rosy picture like [1]
And the biggest reason for going one or the other way is that of open and unhandled security issues. But then I must say, most of what is in [2] is in "needs evaluation" state which means I can not use that to either say it is truly bad or not a problem. Since it is mostly a "is security maintenance unbearable" question I'd think we pass that to ubuntu-security and let them decide which way is more pro user (keeping or removing it).
