Glad to see you can toggle the LED manually through software, that
narrows the issue a little.

Since this problem is reproducible in mainline and not Ubuntu-specific,
we might not be the appropriate people to address the issue. My best
guess is that the driver is missing a quirk for your specific device ID,
I attached a patch that may resolve the issue.

You could try building a kernel with the test patch by following the
directions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild and
applying the patch with `git am` right before building.
