Yes, I would recommend waiting for the patch to be merged upstream. The patches have been submitted as an RFC to the kernel mailing lists (linux-spi, platform-driver-x86) and the relevant maintainers are CC'd. Once accepted, it will flow into distribution kernels (Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.) through regular updates. Installing it manually requires building kernel modules from source, which carries some risk if something goes wrong. I'll keep the gist updated with any feedback from the kernel maintainers.
