system failed to boot; kernel crash

(I believe calamares crashed before grub was run, so I'm betting the
grub that booted was the older one; the older OS/kernel etc no longer
being there, replaced with newer kernel; or parts of it anyway)

at this moment in time, sda1 hasn't been altered; but I may try another
install to it; maybe checking & cleaning some older stuff in /boot -
whilst I don't know enough about dracut.. a lot more of the older system
survives than it did in prior cycles (oracular etc) - this being a no-
format or re-use install; sda1 having data on it I'd like to keep (even
if none of OS itself is valuable to me; I can re-create that)
