Thank you for your favor. The issue has been resolved. :) Today I tried an older USB 2.0 flash drive instead, on the same machine, and the installation completed successfully without any errors. In Ubuntu, lsusb -t shows the working installer USB as a Mass Storage device running at 480M, which confirms it is operating at USB 2.0 speed.
