As for the topic itself, it continues to be worked on, with the various pieces coming together slowly. It's just a very complex thing to do. Anyone who wants to help would be advised to offer their assistance elsewhere (e.g. the [email protected] mailing list), as each comment posted here sends an email to 176 people.
