Honestly, relying on TERM=xterm-color in 2026 is a outdated and brittle.
Rarely do we see xterm anymore and that kind of check is legacy.
Terminfo should be the way handle that (thus supporting other terms),
but it has its own set of issues.

I'd err on the status quo, instead of carrying a patch which is
inappropriate for something which is better tuned by the user in their
own bashrc.

But those are my 2c
