Public bug reported:
Reporting this in the "rust-coreutils" package because Launchpad reports
to "coreutils" get ignored until they are mentioned in a "rust-
coreutils" bug.
Can you please update GNU coreutils for Ubuntu 26.10 to coreutils-9.12?
If so, I also suggest applying an additional patch [1].
We continue updating GNU coreutils with bug fixes and new features. The
uutils developers then copy these new features to pass our test suite.
Canonical is frustratingly treating uutils as if it were a rolling-
release distribution, including pushing deadlines to accommodate it.
But, unfortunately, GNU coreutils is not given the same privilege. This
means that on Ubuntu, uutils has features that GNU coreutils does not,
despite them being invented by GNU coreutils. For example, `uname -A`:
```
$ podman run --rm -it ubuntu:26.10
$ { apt update -y; apt upgrade -y; } >/dev/null 2>&1; echo $?
0
uname --version | head -n 1; uname -A;
uname (uutils coreutils) 0.12.0
Kernel name: Linux
Node name: 013fc1dd1912
Kernel release: 7.2.8-200.fc44.x86_64
Kernel version: #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri Sep 25 21:05:44 UTC 2026
Machine: x86_64
Operating system: GNU/Linux
$ gnuuname --version | head -n 1; gnuuname -A;
uname (GNU coreutils) 9.10
gnuuname: invalid option -- 'A'
Try 'gnuuname --help' for more information.
```
It is difficult for me, speaking personally, to interpret this holding
back of GNU coreutils as not being intentional to make the uutils
implementation seem more attractive. Especially when combined with how
hard Canonical is pushing uutils as a selling point for its
distribution, and the attempts to shove it into other distributions.
