Public bug reported:

When update-notifier enters its attention state (e.g. during/after an
unattended-upgrades run), it publishes StatusNotifierItem icon name gtk-
dialog-warning-panel (verified live via D-Bus: busctl --user get-
property <bus> /org/ayatana/NotificationItem/software_update_available
org.kde.StatusNotifierItem IconName). This is a legacy GNOME2/Tango-era
panel-variant icon name that is not shipped by any theme installed on a
stock Xubuntu system — find /usr/share/icons -name "*warning-panel*"
returns nothing on a clean install with the default elementary-xfce
theme.

The XFCE panel systray has no fallback when an icon name cannot be
resolved, so the item renders as an empty slot (a "hole") in the system
tray instead of an icon. The stale state persists after the upgrade
finishes (observed: attention state still Active hours after the 18:49
unattended-upgrade completed), so the hole remains until update-notifier
is restarted.

Normal state is fine: when updates are merely available, update-notifier
publishes software-update-available, which does exist in elementary-xfce
and renders correctly. Only the attention-state name is missing.

** Affects: update-notifier (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
