I agree, they are definitely very similar. My bug was actually occurring with both the generic and the rt kernels (I'm wanting to jam with UbuntuStudio too). Both the generic and the rt kernels work with the latest nvidia driver if I add Option "NvAGP" "0" to the xorg.conf file. I'm not sure whether that's actually impacting graphics performance, though. Got any clue what NvAGP actually does?
