i use nvidia-glx . . .
i dont have this bug, but I confirm that on upgrade to the version below of 
kernel, i lose nvidia driver unless I do the following....

I'm using 2.6.24-12-generic
upgraded from feisty fresh install to hardy dev version (as of todays 
versions). Same here, no nvidia.

I followed the instructions on removing packages on page 1...
in synaptic i removed with config also:
nvidia-glx          1:96.43.05+2.6.24.11-12.31
linux-restricted-modules-generic           2.6.24.12.13
linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic     2.6.24-12.22
along with their 'virtual' dependencies.

Then, I reinstalled directly, no reboot....
xorg had been changed to 'nvidia' in driver section so i rebooted,
i got nvidia logo and normal accelerated X
