No need to install to HDD, livecd is fine. This might sound silly, but could you try Fedora9 beta livecd available here: http://fedoraproject.org/get-prerelease It uses the latest X snapshot from upstream, and if you do get a correct resolution with it, then it should be possible to cherry pick a commit from upstream. Also attach the conf and log from it.
