Another data point. I booted Ubuntu 7.10, removed the proprietary nvidia driver and rebooted using the nv driver. The Xorg.0.log shows that the monitor cannot be identified (so this is not a regression from 7.10 to 8.04). The screen resolution applet however allows me to select resolutions up to 1680x1050 (this is a regression). Admittedly it will not allow me to change the refresh rate from 60Hz which is why I switched to using the proprietary driver.
