The too large resolution is a known bug (it's occurring on one of my laptops) and it's reported somewhere else. Upload the output of "sudo lspci -vvnn" of both machines and let's wait. You could try to boot from each version of Ubuntu that comes out and see if the bug is fixed already. Close the bug if it's fixed or when you sell your machine.
