hi
have exact same problem as Gutsy Gibbon but I cannot re-install, remove, add, 
--purge or anything or add additional packages as apt-get  gives same reply as 
dpkg, aptitude and dselect....
dpkg -r lexmark-z700-cups-driver
dpkg: error processing lexmark-z700-cups-driver (--remove):
 Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
 reinstall it before attempting a removal.

 lexmark-z700-cups-driver

dpkg  --remove force-reinst-req lexmark-z700-cups-driver
