just had to tell you about a lucky escape for me to this catch 22...fortunately, this whole debian install was originally mirrored from an iomega 160GB ext drive so I just examined the dpkg directories with #find / -name dpkg and took a guess that the /var/lib/dpkg/ alternatives/ diversions methods/ status available diversions-old parts/ status-old available-old info/ statoverride updates/ cmethopt lock statoverride-old dirs was the one with the garbled software and replaced the whole dir/subdirs from the original iomega installation after mounting my iomega and using #mirrordir /ioext2/var/lib/dpkg/ /var/lib/dpkg I appreciate that any package installation I have done recently wont be reflected in the dpkg Dbase but I can install now using apt-get again so fine... Just see what happens on a reboot I guess.... 1 advantage of the same OS on multiple systems - and mirrordir is Great!! It worked transferring a whole Etch system from a partition to other drive partition where #cp -ax failed... Check it out for sys copies! (Still wanna know how to FORCE a purge or remove what files etc if dodgy 3rd party software breaks dpkg though...) cheers stevee
