My brother got the same problem after upgrading from Dapper to Edgy. There was no obvious reason, X just failed. Only closer analysis showed what was going on, the link was pointing to /bin/true.
I assume that this may happened because he used apt-get and aptitude in multiple runs, so some upgrade code may have been confused.
