I have tested with Manjaro GNOME kernel 3.16.* - the same. Debian didn't even 
boot, not the first time this happened.



I think this might be distro-independent.

You need to isolate the problem.
Now you know that it's not a Gnome problem.
Without testing other distributions you cannot sure it's Ubuntu problem;
