u r right. Every data file format needs its decoder plugin for handling and understanding the data in it. MP3 has some issues, related to properietary licenses, so it is not shipped with Linux as default. But you can install it from Internet.
You using Gnome, so go to gstreamer section and install good, bad and ugly plugins to handle all sort of multimedia files.
