Hi Matthew,
Belatedly, welcome to the list! Thanks for taking the time to give us
your input.

Point #1
Ask "what exactly do we want to accomplish" and "just what
will spread ubuntu need to do that is distinct from the ubuntu website."
I think this is still where we're falling down. We have flow charts
and some mock-ups but still no real debate around SpreadUbuntu's
raison d'etre. I think SU is a good idea but I think we need to
discuss why it's a good idea.
I'm guilty of not adding much to the debate, other than saying that we
need one. My hope is that I'll have more time to rectify that.
Here are some thoughts:
Spread firefox did an excellent job of organizing a grass-roots campaign
Ubuntu's success has been largely thanks to grass-roots advocacy
already. That's fantastic for Ubuntu overall, but complicates
SpreadUbuntu. If SU is to be a success, it needs to come up from the
existing grass-roots advocates, most of whom are not on this ML.
We can't impose a ready-made SpreadUbuntu on the rest of the Ubuntu
community, no matter how much discussion goes on within our own team.
That's why I plan to start contacting LoCo teams and other advocates
to get their input into what SU should be.
This also means that, until we start addressing some of the
fundamental "whys", we should stop concerning ourselves with the
"hows". Jenda has worked hard on his ideas for the way SU should be
but the rest of us really need to start pulling the whole SpreadUbuntu
idea apart, so that what we're left with is a lean, mean Ubuntu
spreading machine. If SpreadUbuntu isn't the absolute best it can be,
then we'll taint the Marketing Team in the eyes of the rest of the
community.
As I say, I know I need to start addressing those "whys", rather than
just cajoling others into doing so :)
* Provide clear information on the benefits of Ubuntu, and Linux
in general.
Are you sure this isn't better answered on the main website?
This is a really pertinent question to raise. If people are making
proposals, for SU, that should be handled on the main Ubuntu.com
website, what mechanism is there for the team to feedback to
Canonical?
