Marketing Team Members,

On many occasions I have used the words “Ubuntu Values” referring to the
measure of character we should choose to adopt when representing the
community of Ubuntu. To re-iterate, my list of Ubuntu Values are as
follows.

     1. Equality – without bias or prejudice of gender, culture, race,
or creed

     2. Love – treat others as you would like to be treated

     3. Integrity – wanting only the best for the community

     4. Excellence – your best effort

     5. Inclusion – all are welcomed, encourage others to join

     6. Teamwork – share the effort

I will tell you now this task is easier said than done. I find myself
handicapped as I endeavor to apply these values, not by a physical
restriction, but by culture. I am not well traveled but the Internet has
opened the world to my door and I question if I am communicating with
the individuals of this team as well as I could.

I have been a part of the Marketing Team for a number of weeks and
fueled by excitement and enthusiasm I sought to add value to the effort.
However when presented with numerous choices, I became frustrated by the
lack of process.

What I have been working on these past days is my vision of what I would
like the marketing team to be. I offer these ideas for your
consideration noting which Ubuntu Values apply (IMHO).

*** An Overview of the Marketing Team Process ***

1) General Structure (Love, Excellence, & Integrity)

I see the Ubuntu Marketing Team being governed by a council consisting
of a Team advocate who leads the Marketing Team and an advocate from
each of the active projects. The mix of the council would change as
projects come and go.

2) The Marketing Wish Board (Love, Inclusion, & Teamwork)

The principal here is all ideas are welcome. For those who may be
intimidated by the thought of crafting a wiki page (I was at first) they
may submit their idea to the Ubuntu Marketing Team Wish Board. This is
as easy as sending an email to the Wish Board advocate. Reviewing the
Wish board would be a standing agenda item of the council meeting.

3) Marketing Proposals (Excellence & Teamwork)

This is the first step for those who are comfortable crafting wiki pages
and have a good sense of the effort required by their proposal. This is
the second step for ideas started on the Wish Board. Content may vary
from a “brain dump” to a well organized plan and life at this stage is
expected to be iterative with discussion occurring via the list server.
Larger proposals may include a Charter in addition to Launchpad
resources.

4) Submittal to the Council (Teamwork, Integrity, & Excellence)

When the advocate of the proposal is ready, they may submit it to the
Marketing Council. The job of the council is to review proposals to
ensure they fit the purpose and vision of the Team and to validate
resources are available to go forward. A proposal may be accepted as a
Marketing Team project, be placed on hold and moved to the Parking Lot,
or denied. Proposals which are denied may be re-submitted if the
deficiencies noted originally are corrected.

5) Projects (Equality, Integrity, & Excellence)

Marketing Team projects are simply proposals endorsed by the Team.
Projects are managed by a Team advocate referred to as a coach. The
coach is responsible for directing activity, achieving milestones, and
reporting status to the Marketing Council. In addition, the team coach
becomes the team advocate on the Marketing council for the duration of
the project.

This is my best effort (Integrity & Excellence) of how to improve the
Marketing Team. I realize my handicapped as stated above but I hope I
have communicated my message as it was intended (Love).

As always all comments are welcome (Inclusion).

Cheers,

John
