Thanks for this very thoughtful response. My point about Debian is not that we have to get tools from there because we can't do it, but that Debian is our upstream, has an extensive and well proven tool set to do packaging work, and that to the extent we can work together with Debian to jointly extend this tool set, both distributions can benifit. My intent was to emphasize working with Debian, not being dependent on them.
