sorry for confusion- the webcam worked when i was installing ubuntustudio12.04 on this laptop, during installation it asked to take a photo with it for my login photo.
Cheese installed OK on my other computer with ubuntu10.04, Cheese doesnt seem to have installed properly on this laptop with ubuntustudio12.04. its a novatech laptop with an i7, the low latency of ubuntu studio seemed a good idea for recording etc rather than all the clutter of win7. novatech nspire 2760 black http://www.novatech.co.uk/laptop/range/nspire2760-blackedition.html Processor Description : Intel Core i7-2760QM Processor Cache : 6MB Clockspeed : 2.4GHz Manufacturer : Intel Memory Description : 2 X 4GB DDR3 1333Mhz Memory Speed : 1333Mhz Harddrive Description : Seagate Momentus XT 500GB Hybrid SSD SATA Hard Drive Interface : SATA Technology : Solid State Hybrid Optical Drives Description : SATA DVD Writer Graphics Description : NVIDIA GT 555M 2GB DDR3 Graphics Chipset : 144 Shaders CPU Clock 590Mhz Memory Clock 900Mhz Shader Clock 1180Mhz Bus Width 128Bit Bandwidth 28.8GB/s Texture Fill Rate 14.2GT/s Chassis Description : 1366 x 768 Resolution Bluetooth : Yes Dimensions : 383 x 262 x 36.6 Graphics : NVIDIA GT555 Mobile Graphics Battery : 8 Cell 5200mAh Battery Memory Capacity : 8GB Memory Slots : 2 LAN : On board 10/100/1000 Mbps Fast Ethernet controller USB : 2 x USB 3.0 Ports 2 x USB 2.0 Ports Webcam : 1.3 Mega Pixel Weight : 2.8KG Screen : 15.6" (16:9) HD LED Backlight Fingerprint Scanner : Yes Card Reader : MMC, SD/SDHC/SDXC, MS/MS Pro/MS Pro HG, Memory Card Wireless : 802.11 1x1 b/g/n From: Mike Holstein Sent: Wednesday, June 06, 2012 4:09 PM To: Ubuntu Studio Users Help and Discussion Subject: Re: video recording i think i mis-read this message.. if the cam worked in 10.04, and not in 12.04, its likely something that *can* be supported in 12.04. i would just use 10.04 if all is working well... "if it aint broke" as they say... the kernel can become bloated if drivers are kept in it, and the support for your device could have been removed. you can always try different kernels, or build your own with support for your device, or add support to the current kernel. i *always* suggest trying the live CD's before installing to get an idea of hardware support. I have wasted a lot of time hunting down wireless issues when all i needed to do was turn it on lol.
