Tom proposed the following answer:
Nano is most likely to be already installed.  It's too small a program
to be included in "Add/Remove Applications" but you should be able to
see from Synaptic that it is already installed.  Just try the command

sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst

and it should show you the menu.lst in the same terminal console that you typed 
the command into ;)  If it doesn't then worry about installing it afterwards :)
