Conduct an experiment. Download (or otherwise obtain) the 32-bit version of Ubuntu and attempt to install it on your machine. See if it is OK at reboot. We are trying to rule out a hardware problem at this point. It is possible that the 64-bit driver is just a puddle of doo-doo.
If 32-bit Ubuntu does work, but not 64-bit then we have isolated it to either a BIOS problem in your machine (since the manufacturer probably only tested it with that worthless 32-bit Windows stuff) or a 64-bit driver problem. Test two, download, or otherwise obtain 64-bit Suse 11.x and try installing it on the same machine. See if your reboot issue is gone. If it is, you can either keep running SuSE or try Ubuntu again once the new release comes out. Suse 11.x is much more current than Hardy. The new release of Ubuntu will catch up to SuSE quite a bit. It will have newer, more updated drivers, fresher KDE rev, etc. Of course, if neither work on your machine, but 32-bit does, you have a Windows only machine. Welcome to the wonderful world of Microsoft fraud.
