after running apt-get update --fix-broken
I get
  Err http://....various paths.... Could not resolve
the last error is
  dpkg was interrupted (probably when my laptop died)
  run dpkg --configure -a

doing that gives further errors
  parse error in /var/lib/dpkg/updates/0051 near line 17 package
